Tropical Cyclone Penny expected to strengthen overnight

The impact of Tropical Cyclone Penny on Queensland’s top end may not be over, with forecasters warning it could return.

The system is tracking eastwards further away from the Queensland coast but is forecast to intensify to a Category 2 system overnight, before turning towards the southwest during Friday.

At this stage Penny is forecast to weaken as it approaches the coast, however, there is still the risk of it maintaining cyclone strength as it nears the coast early next week.

Weather Bureau forecaster Michael Knepp gives Luke Grant an update.
