Why your Christmas ham will cost significantly more this year

The cost of pork is set to rise this year, but it’s not because of the drought.

African swine fever has wiped out a quarter of the world’s pigs.

The disease hasn’t spread to Australia and doesn’t impact humans, so pork products are still safe to eat.

CEO of Australian pork Margot Andrae tells Steve Price the impact on the industry is unprecedented.

“Over this period we’re expecting to see 350 million pigs die as a result of African swine fever.

“We’ve never seen a disruption to global protein like this ever before.”

She’s also encouraging people to make sure they read the label and buy Australian pork.
