Senator says supporting lower immigration is not xenophobic

Article image for Senator says supporting lower immigration is not xenophobic

Senator Jim Molan says equating support for lower immigration with xenophobia is “just wrong”.

Senator Molan tells Mark Levy that Tony Abbott has received such criticism for his call to consider lowering the rate of immigration to Australia.

“It took less than three hours for the first news article… for him to be called ‘xenophobic’.

“It’s just wrong.”

Both Senator Molan and Mr Abbott have been vocal recently in their opinions that lowering the rate of immigration should be considered.

Senator Molan also responds to Treasurer Scott Morrison’s claim that cutting immigration would harm the budget.

“If having a higher number improves the budget, why not double it?

“There are a range of other costs that come in.”
