Queensland residents remain on high alert as Tropical Cyclone Owen heads back towards the land.

The cyclone is packing very destructive wind gusts over 200km/h and heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding.

The Category 3 system is sitting in the Gulf of Carpentaria and is expected to intensify into a Category 4 system and wreak havoc from Cairns down to Coolangatta.

The weather bureau predicts it will then weaken as it heads south-east.

Nine News Queensland weatherman Garry Youngberry tells Ray Hadley it’s “a very nasty, severe tropical cyclone”.

He says while it will “weaken when it reaches land… we’re likely to see incredible amounts of rainfall”.
