Queensland minister’s ‘messy’ communication breakdown leaves ADF soldiers in limbo

The Queensland government is under fire over miscommunication which saw ADF personnel en route from Afghanistan stuck in Dubai awaiting spots in hotel quarantine.

The Queensland Health Minister claimed she had been unable to contact Defence Minister Peter Dutton to confirm quarantine arrangements, only to later realise she had the wrong phone number.

Retired SAS commander Heston Russell told Jim Wilson the “messy” situation was the result of an “information breakdown” between state and federal authorities.

“The biggest issue with all of this, Jim, is these things don’t come to a head until it’s reaching the media at the moment.

“The people caught in between, particularly when Defence is being so slack in not issuing any comments on this, are those servicemen and women.

“Common sense is gone, and decisions are only made once they’re obliged through humiliation.”
