Is Australia really heading for an EV economic boom?

Luke Grant

On Monday the electric vehicle industry was high-fiving anyone with a loose hand about the fact that Tesla had become our biggest selling passenger vehicle brand. Now granted, you do see these vehicles on the road but it’s not like they’re 10 deep at traffic lights.

Luke Grant speaks with Josh Dowling, motoring editor from Car Advice / Drive, who must have thought the same and did some sniffing around and arrived at this.

“US electric-car specialist Tesla claims it sold 15,000 vehicles in Australia last year, but state and territory registration data released last week showed 12,000 Teslas were added to the national fleet in 2021.”  He goes on, “an important victory hangs in the balance, depending on which number is correct.

‘Based on unsubstantiated figures released by Tesla and the Electric Vehicle Council, the Tesla Model 3 sedan has scuppered the 28-year winning streak of the Toyota Camry in the mid-size sedan class in Australia (15,054 versus 13,081 sales).’

‘However, based on national registration data, the Tesla Model 3 finished a close second behind the Toyota Camry last year (12,058 versus 13,081 sales) and the 28-year winning streak still stands.’
