Ben Fordham has consistently campaigned for families and carers affected by changes to the new National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

And while the plan certainly supports countless families in need, many others have fallen by the wayside after cuts to funding and respite days.

Ben Fordham has been inundated with emails from those affected by the changes and often the complaints are the same.

There’s a suffocating amount of red tape, a significant drop in funding and a requirement to repeatedly apply for support even though the disability will never improve.

Yesterday Ben spoke with NSW Disabilities Minister Ray Williams who admitted the new scheme is leaving some worse off.

Federal Minister for Families and Social Services Paul Fletcher tells Ben he sees the need for improvement.

“Certainly some of the cases that you have brought to me that have been highlighted to you by your listeners, I have not been happy with.”

“Some of the problems that you’ve passed through to me are very complex cases where the supports that’s being provided is very significant financially.

“We are going to have a special pathway for the complex cases because they raise real complexities some of the others don’t.”

Ben then pushes the minister to confront issues surrounding the lack of respite that carers receive under the new plan.

“Under the NDIS, respite seems to be an afterthought or not a thought at all,” he says to the minister.

“Surely if you’re putting together a better system than the one we previously had, respite should’ve front and centre of that new system.”

Mr Fletcher says he understands the concern.

“It’s a question of the plan being tailored.”
