Husband charged with forcing his wife into slavery

Three people from Sydney’s west have been charged with slavery offences after a woman was allegedly forced into working as a slave.
Police allege the Afghani woman, who was married to a 39-year-old Australian man, was forced into domestic servitude by her husband and his family.
The woman was then allegedly tricked into travelling back to Afghanistan on a one-way ticket and abandoned by her husband a few days later.
The husband, along with his 28-year-old brother and their 58-year-old mother, were arrested in Merrylands.
The older man and his mother have been charged with possessing a slave and excessive powers of ownership over a slave, which has a maximum penalty of 25 years in jail.
The Australian Federal Police has now reopened a case into alleged domestic servitude of the man’s first wife.
