Do you feel safe walking Sydney’s streets at night?

Article image for Do you feel safe walking Sydney’s streets at night?

Your answer may depend on one factor. Your gender.

A new survey says 90% of young women in Sydney feel vulnerable walking the streets in the dark.

Plan International has designed an app called ‘Free to Be’ which tracks where women feel unsafe in the city.

Alice Rummery co-designed the app and tells Chris Kenny how her personal experience with sexual harassment on Sydney’s streets changed her life.

“I change my habits just to feel safe. It’s always a thought in my mind when I’m out.

“We’ve only been out for less than 12 hours and we’ve already had 400 spots on the map where women have told their stories.”

There’s major thing blokes can do to help, Alice says.

“The most important thing is the understanding.”
