‘Cancel culture’: Brendan Cowell talks about ‘The Crucible’

Deborah Knight

Brendan Cowell weighs in on why the Crucible play will resonate with today’s modern audience.

The Award-winning Australian actor, director and writer Brendan Cowell starred as John Proctor in the recent five-star production of The Crucible from the National Theatre.

Deborah Knight asked Branden if he thinks the play that is considered a ‘witch hunt to do with communism’ will resonate with modern audiences.

“I think when society is disillusioned, we tend to clutch onto something and need to blame it on something. It seems to be a human kind of thing,” the actor responded.

“If you look at cancel culture today, often people don’t really know what they can sling, but they get on board the height of things and that definitely is the case in this play.”

The production will play in select Australian cinemas from the 4th of March.
