‘They’ve just got to make their mind up to do it’: Big Guns on leadership spill

As the Prime Minister fends off claims his leadership is in strife, the Big Guns can see a spill looming on the horizon.

Mr Turnbull launched a backtrack on energy policy today, scrapping a plan to legislate emissions reductions targets.

The move comes amid speculation Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton could challenge for the top job.

The bad news didn’t end there for the PM, as a Fairfax poll revealed Labor has a 10 point lead over the Coalition after preferences.

One half of the Big Guns, Graham Richardson, tells Ben Fordham he can see a leadership spill coming but they need to act quickly for success.

Richo says if a move isn’t made to oust the Prime Minister within a month, a spill will become “irrelevant”.

“They’ve just got to make their mind up to do it and get on with the job.”

The other half of the Big Guns, Andrew Bolt, says the “momentum” may be behind Peter Dutton to secure the top job but Tony Abbott should be the pick.

“Are the Liberals once again making a mistake in not going with their best communicator? A guy who’s done the job before and won two election campaigns already?

“Why would they put him in the shed?”
