ACCC fears Transurban deal could hike road tolls

Article image for ACCC fears Transurban deal could hike road tolls

The Competition watchdog says Sydney drivers could lose out if Transurban buys the controversial Westconnex project.

The company already controls seven of the nine existing toll roads in New South Wales.

The ACCC says it would be better for competition if another company bought the $16-billion motorway.

Chairman Rod Sims tells Ross Greenwood they want to assess if the purchase would be “anti-competitive”.

“We’ve formed the preliminary view that there are competition concerns.”

He says it’s important to ensure the government is working in the best interest of motorists.

“If Transurban is offering the highest price, they (the government) could well be tempted to take that, but it could well be having competitive roads systems, tolls systems in Sydney could yield continuing benefits to motorists the future.”
