Sydney light rail facing first peak-hour test after shaky start
Sydney’s new CBD light rail is facing its first peak-hour testing this morning after a rocky start on the weekend.
The $2.9 billion light rail project, which operates between Randwick and Circular Quay, was marred by construction delays and a huge budget blowout.
Its long-awaited opening on Saturday wasn’t without issues, with one tram breaking down at Circular Quay for about 40 minutes after a power cell failure.
The government has also been criticised for the slow travel time, with trams taking 50 minutes end-to-end while buses can complete the same journey in 35 minutes.
But Transport Minister Andrew Constance tells John Stanley people just need to give it a chance while teething issues are sorted out.
“I think people need to be a little bit fair on this point. First of all, in due course it’ll get quicker because people will get on and off the tram and get used to it.
“The other thing is there’s 19 stops between Randwick and Circular Quay… buses, of course, can also do express services.”
