Should smartphones be banned in schools?

Article image for Should smartphones be banned in schools?

The Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham has come out in favour of banning smartphones from classrooms.

Minister Birmingham says students should have their phones switched off and in their lockers while they’re in school.

12 months ago, Scotch College in Perth banned mobile phone use during the school day.

Ben Fordham speaks with the principal, Alec O’Connell to find out what impact the ban is having.

“We introduced that policy 12 months ago, and we haven’t looked back.

“This is more about encouraging human communication and allowing students to be themselves without the fear of being videoed by someone else.”
