Australians are calling out for tougher action on disqualified drivers who continue to get behind the wheel.

Ben Fordham says he can’t understand how drivers who’ve been banned from our roads for up to 40 years aren’t punished more harshly.

“My solution is simple,” Ben says.

“If you’re caught driving on a suspended licence you go to jail. That’s the only way of sending the message.”

Police Minister Troy Grant tells Ben the current system isn’t good enough.

“The community are speaking very loudly. The sentiment is very, very clear.

“That’s what we need to consider… what will deter people and properly punish them better than what the current system is doing.”

Kevin Saul is advocating for change following the death of his nine-year-old son Brendan, who was fatally struck in a hit-and-run in 2004.

Kevin says suspended drivers should be jailed for their disqualification period if they’re caught behind the wheel.

Mr Grant, who served as a police officer for twenty years, says there’s “some merit in the sentiment.”

“People have had a gutful, the cops have had a gutful.”
