Sugar industry calls for World Trade Organisation action against India

The sugar industry is calling on the Federal Government to take urgent action to stop Indian sugar subsidies.

The Indian Government has approved a support package for its industry, including assistance to export 5 million tonnes of subsidised sugar.

It’s seen global sugar markets spiral downwards this week, plummeting by $170 per tonne in the past 10 months.

Rural reporter Eddie Summerfield caught up with Cane Growers Association Chairman Paul Schembri.
