Returning international students compound Sydney’s housing crisis

Mike Jeffreys

Luke discusses Sydney’s housing crisis with Dr Abul Rizvi, the former deputy secretary of the Department of Immigration and author of “Population Shock.”

The Telegraph reported yesterday that the crisis is worsened by a rapid influx of international students, surpassing the rate at which new housing can be built.

Rent prices are soaring as a result. In the past year, 38,098 new “households” were formed by international students in Sydney, while only 25,900 new dwellings were completed.

This means that all the new housing supply was absorbed by the incoming students, with the situation expected to worsen in the next year as the number of new students continues to exceed the supply of dwellings.

Additionally, Dr Rizvi provides historical context and addresses the issue of people seeking asylum who arrive by plane.  Many perceive these arrivals as exploiting the system, further adding pressure to the housing crisis.  Overall, the situation is chaotic.
