Concussion overhaul brewing in Australian sport

Clinton Maynard

One of the most significant documents on managing head injuries on the sporting field has been released.

The Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport was produced by some of the world’s leading experts on concussion prevention at the International Conference on Concussion in Sport, held in Berlin late last year.

Among a number of recommendations, the document calls for greater funding and support of facilities at sporting fields in which to conduct medical assessment on players.

It also calls on rule changes in some sports to allow for proper assessment to take place, as well as greater diligence when deciding to return players to the field.

Dr Adrian Cohen is Australia’s leading voice on concussion issues. He also founded Headsafe, an organisation dedicated to the prevention of head and neck injuries on the field.

Dr Cohen joins Michael McLaren.
