Detective Seargent Breda walked into the Maroubra Junction Hotel on Friday afternoon and was stabbed twice in the chest.

The officers from the Child Abuse Squad were there to arrest 33-year-old Nick Newman, an accused sex offender.

Detective Seargent Breda was stabbed multiple times by the offender who was shot dead by other offices, but not before Newman attempted to slash his own neck with a knife.

He was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery and had his kidney removed.

Ben Fordham speaks with Commander of the Child Abuse & Sex Crimes Squad John Kerlatec for an update.

“He’s still critical. He’s still in a serious condition, but he is stable.

“I can say John opened his eyes this morning for the first time since his operation and was able to partially communicate with his family.

“We’re taking it day by day.”
