The Rural Fire Service (RFS) is warning we’re in for a dangerous fire season ahead of a hot and dry summer.

It’s the first week of Spring and some parts of Sydney are already expecting temperatures of over 30 degrees and winds of up to 80km per hour.

A total fire ban has been declared for Sydney and much of northern NSW ahead of hot, dry and windy conditions expected today.

NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons tells Mark Levy it’s an indication of what we’re in for this summer.

He says the drought is really exacerbating the situation.

“There’s a complete lack of moisture, not just in the ground but in the vegetation. That makes it really susceptible to fire.

“Fires are starting easily and they’re spreading quickly.

“The outlook, unfortunately, for the next few months, is nothing but hotter and drier than normal conditions, and there’s no signal for any meaningful rain at all.”
