New cameras to bust drivers using their phones

Should drivers caught texting lose their licence on the spot?

This question has been raised after two police officers were seriously injured after a driver who was texting and driving crashed into them.

Roads Minister Melinda Pavey tells Ben Fordham won’t immediately confiscate licences but will trial new camera technology which catches texting drivers in the act.

“We are going to have some monitoring of people using their mobile phones…so we can actually capture people on camera doing the wrong thing.

“We’re going to trial this and amend our legislation… so we can actually put into a court of law photos of people illegally using their mobile phones.

“We’re doing our homework at the moment on this. We want to roll it out where we have the hotspots and where we have big problems.”
