New abortion law punishment an ‘over-reach’, says state MP

Article image for New abortion law punishment an ‘over-reach’, says state MP

Protesters will face jail time for harassing people outside abortion facilities under new laws.

The laws passed through the Legislative Assembly easily, 61 to 18.

Disability Services Minister Ray Williams was part of the vote and isn’t completely happy with the results.

“I think the genuine intent of the Bill to provide support to women… for myself, some of the punishments were an overreach.”

Mr Williams makes the point that he also supports people who passively counsel and talk to people to help them preserve a life.

“I’d hate to see that punished.”
