Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop has slammed disgraced Labor Senator Sam Dastyari, saying he should have been sacked weeks ago.

Dastyari resigned this morning following the exposure of his close ties to Chinese donors.

Dastyari said his resignation would “spare the [Labor] party any further distraction”.

The Senator also claimed he remained “a loyal, patriotic Australian.”

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop tells Deborah Knight he was “unfit to represent the Australian people”.

“His resignation should take effect immediately and he shouldn’t receive another cent from the Australian tax payer.

“He expressed no regret for letting down Australia. He didn’t put Australia first.”
