‘It’s frankly nuts’: Bizarre council rule that will see $30,000 spent on art in social housing
A requirement that all developments worth over $30 million spend one per cent on art will apply to a social housing project in Glebe.
The initiative will turn 19 dwellings into 75 social housing flats, and it will now have $30,000 worth of art.
Former City of Sydney Councilor Christine Forster was scathing in her assessment of the rule.
“It’s extravagant. It’s frankly nuts,” she said on 2GB Drive
“Everybody wants social housing, and any type of housing that council approves should be amenable, it should be good quality, it should have green open space.
“But to enforce a rule that you spend that amount of money that could actually be going into the development of more housing on public artwork.
“You can get artwork for a lot less than that, you can make space for a lot less than that.”
