‘It still sits with me today’: Deputy Premier reveals his struggle with abortion

Article image for ‘It still sits with me today’: Deputy Premier reveals his struggle with abortion

Deputy Premier John Barilaro has opened up about his own experience with abortion in a candid interview with Ben Fordham.

NSW Parliament is continuing to debate a bill that would decriminalise abortion, with many MPs weighing in with their point of view.

John Barilaro tells Ben Fordham even though it’s a difficult decision, he’ll be supporting the bill due to his own personal experience.

“As a young bloke, I had the situation where I had a girlfriend that got pregnant.

“We made a decision not to have the little one and to have an abortion.

“That’s 30 years ago, mate, and it still sits with me today. I don’t know if it was the right or wrong decision.

“My wife and I have got three beautiful young daughters but we’ve also had a couple of miscarriages.

“You just think to yourself, ‘have I done something wrong? Why are we getting the miscarriages? Was that decision early in life one of those things that I’m now paying a price on?’

“It impacts on people… it’s such a personal issue. That’s why all I ask is respect in the debate.”
