One in eight men will experience depression, one in five will experience anxiety and, shockingly, men make up six of the eight suicides in Australia each day.

Today marks International Fathers’ Mental Health Day, an initiative to bring awareness to post-natal depression in new fathers.

Kirstin Bouse is a clinical psychologist and she tells Chris Smith through her experience “men are quite lost”.

“Men are far more reluctant to seek help, so they tend to find themselves in a far sadder and depressed state.

“Dads feel enormous pressure, they feel they need to be the rock and the provider… even separate to fatherhood that is something that men feel.”

Listener Pete called in to share his own experience after losing his brother to depression.

He had some very wise words for those who are suffering, “it ain’t weak to speak”.
