Inner West Council mayor won’t support scrapping Australia Day

Inner West Council will vote tonight on whether they will scrap Australia Day celebrations.

Mayor Darcy Byrne says the motion, brought forward by the Greens, is likely to fail.

“I will be [opposing the motion], I think it’s important that we commemorate the very proud history of Indigenous people in this country.

“But we shouldn’t be doing that in a way that results in us having our… rights to conduct citizenship ceremonies, for instance, stripped.

“I suspect it will just be the Greens councillors who will be voting for the proposal. Of course, it’s the sort of politics that they’re always engaged in.”

Members of the far-right group Cooks Convicts have said they will be at the meeting to protest the vote.

“We’ll deal with them, that won’t be a problem.”
