Businesses could face a fine of up to $50,000 for tampering with the ANZAC biscuit recipe.

The Department of Veteran Affairs has strict rules around the famous Australian biscuit, including sticking to the traditional recipe.

Businesses can’t add any new ingredients, such as eggs, chocolate chips or almonds, and they must call them ANZAC biscuits, not cookies.

Two years ago, Gelato Messina was forced to change its ‘ANZAC Bikkie’ flavour to ‘ANZAC Biscuit’.

But Chris Smith thinks the department is taking things too far.

“All food types and plates and dishes are modified in this country, why can’t we modify the ANZAC biscuit?”
