Fight to remove copyright on the Aboriginal flag

Article image for Fight to remove copyright on the Aboriginal flag

The Senate is calling on the government to make the Aboriginal flag free for use after a clothing company claimed copyright on it.

Since WAM Clothing was given exclusive rights to the Aboriginal flag they have reportedly sent several “cease and desist” notices to Aboriginal-owned clothing businesses that use the flag.

They are demanding businesses ask for permission to use the flag and pay a fee.

Former Labor Senator Nova Peris tells Ben Fordham the flag should be used freely.

“It is an icon to all Australians.

“We don’t want to have to pay to use our flag, we want our flag to be the same as the Australian flag.”
