The City of Sydney has banned an inner-city wine bar from playing a French game, pétanque, on its premises after a single noise complaint.

The Black Bottle wine bar in Darlinghurst has become famous for a French game similar to bocce, called pétanque.

A neighbour has complained about the sound the metal balls make when they come together on the sandpit.

Co-owner of Black Bottle Lucas Cristofle tells Ben Fordham he doesn’t think the balls made a loud noise.

“There was a single complaint that led to the council officer to give me a call and ask us to stop.

“We didn’t think we were hurting anybody… we just find the response a bit drastic.”
