Liberal senator Eric Abetz isn’t ruling out voting against the government’s National Energy Guarantee, saying it’s still a “work in progress”.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull claimed the government’s flagship energy policy received “overwhelming support” from his colleagues, but he now faces a fight to get the policy through parliament.

Up to ten Coalition MPs have raised concerns about the NEG.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott is one of them, telling Ben Fordham on Wednesday the policy should go “back to the drawing board”.

Senator Eric Abetz tells Ben he’s “reserving his position” because the policy isn’t “fleshed out” yet.

“We haven’t seen the legislation as yet and that is why I say to all my colleagues, how on earth can you absolutely sign on, or indeed, absolutely sign off, without having had all the detail put in front of you.”

The Tasmanian senator says the NEG “is still a work in progress”.

“I’m looking forward to further refinements being made.

“But at the end of the day, my concern is… price, price, price.”
