NSW Volunteer of the Year Announced

Article image for NSW Volunteer of the Year Announced

Two of Australia’s most remarkable women join Ben.

Commitment and compassion. That’s what defines the lives of the two women honoured at the NSW Volunteer of the Year awards.

Beverly Kerr, named the NSW Senior Volunteer of the Year and NSW Volunteer of the Year, officially retired in 2001. But that didn’t slow her down.

Beverly devotes her life to giving emergency assistance to homeless people affected by drugs and alcohol.

Beverly said she couldn’t believe it when her name was called out.

“I’m not very emotional but I did have a few tears when they announced it.”

Judith Barry has been named Adult Volunteer of the Year, for dedicating the past decade to helping victims of violence prepare for court.

Over 10 years she has helped 689 people at Burwood Local Court.

Judith was equally as shocked as Beverly.

“I’d describe it as like being a deer in the headlights. I thought, ‘how come they’re calling my name?’”

Ben also spoke with NSW Junior Volunteer of the Year, 11-year-old Tia Brennan
