The New South Wales Blues have overcome their Newcastle curse to snatch a victory in the season opener of the Women’s State of Origin series.

Trailing at the break, it was the brilliant boot of Jesse Southwell that saw them take the lead and the momentum.

The Blues are looking to defend the shield after last year’s triumph and with that win in the bank, they’re officially one step closer.

The series now heads North to Suncorp Stadium where the Maroons will host the Blues  in a fortnight.
