Food growers are concerned that a varroa mite spread to bees throughout NSW will affect harvests and veggie prices.

The parasitic mite which was first detected in the Port of Newcastle is now being detected in the Central Coast and other NSW regions.

CEO of the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council Danny Le Feuvre gave some perspective on the importance of bees, explaining that “Every third mouthful of food you eat has had some kind of pollination.”

Almond and fruit growers are among the producers that will be hardest hit from a state-wide outbreak.

Surveillance and eradication is continuing around NSW.
