Why wait for Monday? Infectious diseases expert calls for weekend gatherings

An infectious diseases expert is backing calls to allow Sydneysiders a backyard gathering on Saturday or Sunday, ahead of Monday’s official reopening.

The ANU’s Professor Peter Collignon told Jim Wilson outdoor gatherings in homes are “a pretty low-risk activity” where all guests are vaccinated, and there’s no medical reason they can’t go ahead immediately.

“A lot of this is arbitrary.

“Having people over for a barbeque outside is much safer than having the same number of people indoors on Monday night.”
