Infectious diseases experts are remaining calm despite the persistent surge of COVID-19 cases across the country.

One of Australia’s best known professors throughout the pandemic, Professor Peter Collignon says vaccines are clearly doing their job.

“I’m reasonably calm because we’re not seeing the uptick in hospital admissions and death, particularly not in the vaccinated people,” he told Chris O’Keefe.

“It actually means the vaccines are doing what they’re designed to do, … [which is] to stop you dying and stop you getting seriously ill.”

Professor Collignon says hospitalisations are mostly unvaccinated people.

“In NSW there’s something like 92, 93 per cent double vaccinated.

“There’s maybe eight per cent unvaccinated adults, and they represent something like 80 per cent of the people in ICU.

“Yes, that is a danger and we can get overwhelmed, but the answer to that is to get vaccinated.”
