Why the food supply chain is still struggling despite COVID changes

Companies in the food supply chain say they need priority access to rapid antigen tests in order to address stock shortages.

Workers deemed COVID close contacts are exempt from isolating if they don’t have symptoms but must return a negative rapid antigen test.

Australian Food and Grocery Council CEO Tanya Barden told Ben Fordham rapid antigen tests “scarce as hen’s teeth” need to be available to essential services.

“Or as an alternative, we need to be able to relax those rules for lower-risk settings so that they’re not requiring that testing every single day.”

Australian Trucking Association Managing Director David Smith told Ben Fordham there are a lot of delays leaving shelves empty.

“It’s the most inefficient I’ve ever seen the food chain working.

“There’s just not enough staff.”
