‘We’re done’: nurses and midwives exhausted amid impending strike action

Clinton Maynard

Up to thousands of New South Wales, nurses and midwives from over 150 hospitals are preparing to walk off the job tomorrow for the first time in a decade.

The strikes are coming after staff demanded better staff-to-patient ratios and pay rises above the 2.5 per cent offered by the NSW Government previously.

With Omicron cases spiking and COVID putting extreme pressure on health staff, the aim is for the strike to gain the attention of the Premier.

Nick Howson from the Nurses and Midwives Association told Jim Wilson it’s ‘exhausting’ not being heard.

“We’re well and truly done.”

Mr Howson claims the staff to patient ratios are crucial and need to be fixed saying: “It’s not for us, it’s for the people of New South Wales”.

“Constantly having to be on high alert is the biggest toll”.

Patients will still have life-preserving staff tomorrow sorted by NSW Health and Mr Howson said: “We will be better staffed tomorrow than we have been through points of the pandemic”.

“Ratio saves lives, get on board.”
