Veterans are calling on the government to provide an urgent update on an investigation into claims of unlawful killings by Australian troops during the Afghanistan War.

Australian Special Forces troops accused of Afghanistan war crimes will not be investigated by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The ICC will instead focus on investigating alleged crimes committed by the Taliban and the Islamic State Khorasan Province.

The Brereton inquiry into allegations of war crimes by Australian Special Forces identified 39 murders against civilians and prisoners by up to 19 Australian troops.

Retired Special Forces Commando Heston Russell told Ben Fordham an update is needed to “help so many veterans lost in limbo”.

“Mr Albanese has a prime chance, he’s moved so quickly on some things … it’s time for him to step up.”
