‘Utter relief’: Chris Waller explains what’s next for Winx

Article image for ‘Utter relief’: Chris Waller explains what’s next for Winx

Winx is enjoying her first few days of retirement, as arguably Australia’s greatest ever horse.

The champion mare was farewelled by an adoring, sold-out crowd at Royal Randwick on Saturday, winning the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

The victory was her 33rd consecutive and final win of a career that will go down in history.

The Queen has sent a congratulatory letter to trainer Chris Waller, praising him for his pivotal role in Winx’s success.

Waller tells Alan Jones it was a feeling of “utter relief”.

“Yes, everybody expected her to win but, the fact is, it’s sport and you don’t know what lies ahead.”

The superstar racehorse will transition into motherhood, with her foals expected to be worth a fortune.

Waller explains how the move will happen.

“Today Winx is in her stable here at Rosehill. When she goes to stud it’ll be on to the Hunter Valley.

“We gradually take the high power grain out of their diets. She’ll get more hay, less grain, more grass.”

Alan also spoke with part-owner Debbie Kepitis, who says she is “in awe of what we have seen happen”.

“It was just unbelievable.”
