The Defence Minister is confident Australia’s plans to acquire nuclear submarines remain on track, despite concerns from a close ally.

With help from the US and UK, Australia is getting a new fleet of nuclear powered submarines.

But US lawmakers are concerned about that plan, arguing their own shipyards are stretched and the US navy fleet is also waiting on new ships.

Peter Jennings is the executive director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.

He told Joe Hildebrand US senators wrote to the President, concerned that nuclear submarines would undercut the ability of the US Navy to acquire their own.
