The man in charge of coordinating urgent help for farmers in flood-ravaged North Queensland says it’s a significant catastrophe.

Receding floodwaters are revealing the extent of the disaster, with graphic images showing hundreds of thousands of rotting cattle carcasses.

Brigadier Steve Jobson is based out of Julia Creek and has spent the last 72 hours touring the region.

He tells Alan Jones it’s crucial that help from the defence force is reaching the right areas.

“It looked more like the coastline and it was quite confronting for everybody as we were undertaking our aerial reconnaissance.

“A lot of infrastructure here is isolated. A lot of these communities have been effectively islands.”

Queensland state MP Robbie Katter is from the region and has toured ravaged townships with his father Bob Katter.

He tells Alan Jones the flood disaster zone is the size of Victoria, with horrific scenes everywhere you look.

“They’re very graphic, they’re very macabre.

“It’s a massive issue and they’re still trying to keep animals alive at the moment.”
