2GB building owner failed to tell residents about flammable cladding for seven months

The owner of our own building here at 2GB has confirmed flammable cladding has not yet been removed from the building, despite their knowing about it for seven months.

A number of NSW properties contain the dangerous, combustible cladding, which is similar to what was wrapped around the Grenfell Tower in London before a huge fire killed 72 people.

Ben Fordham revealed on Thursday that the 2GB building is on a list of 650 Sydney properties which have been assessed or need to be assessed for the cladding.

He has now received confirmation from property owner Goodman that five per cent of the external facade of the building is wrapped with the flammable cladding, and that the contract for removal is still being finalised (full statement below).

Full statement from Goodman:

  • We’ve been proactive and taking action on the issue of non-compliant ACP cladding since the ban was announced in August of last year. Soon after the announcement, we proactively started a comprehensive audit of our full property portfolio and works have already commenced on one of our properties.

  • The audit and testing process has been vigorous, with sample panels being removed and inspected. Where laboratory tests cannot confirm compliance, the ACP cladding panels have been included in the replacement program

  • We’ve found that approximately 5% of the external façade of City West Office Park is clad with a product that needs to be removed, that is, contains more than 30% Polyethylene. This was self-reported to the cladding registration portal.

  • Following completion of the investigation stage at the start of the year we have designed and tendered the specialist replacement works. The replacement material selection and the safe method of replacement has been part of this process. This contract is currently being finalised and we will then be working with Council for approvals to commence the works soon after.

  • The audit, testing and works are being funded by us and customers have not been asked to contribute to the works.

  • We want to ensure that when we’re communicating with customers, we are able to be precise and clear about the extent of the issue in their building so as to not cause any unnecessary alarm. We will be communicating with customers once the timeline for the rectification works is confirmed which will be in coming weeks.

  • We’re confident in the building management systems we have, particularly the comprehensive fire safety system we have at the property to further mitigate any risk caused by the small number of affected panels we have there.
