Tony Abbott ready for a dog fight at the next election

The Wentworth by-election loss has forced the Coalition into minority government and there are fears more Liberal strongholds could follow.

Dr Kerryn Phelps beat Liberal candidate Dave Sharma with a swing of almost 20 per cent against the government.

The left wing of politics is calling for a similar campaign at the next election in Tony Abbott’s seat of Warringah.

The former prime minister tells Ray Hadley he’s ready to fight.

“I’ve never taken my seat lightly, I’ve always put in a big effort. That won’t change.

“Last time round I had a pretty strong campaign against me and I expect that will be the case again.”

Mr Abbot says it’s time for the protest votes to stop and for Liberal-minded people to get behind the party.

“What I’m saying to all shades of Liberal opinion, whether you were a Turnbull supporter or an Abbott supporter, we’ve just got to back the team.

“No government is absolutely perfect, no political party ticks every single box but the Morrison Coalition is an infinitely better bet than the Shorten Labor Party.

“We’ve had our protest votes in Longman, we’ve had our protest votes in Wentworth… but now, we’ve got to get it out of our system, all pull together, so that Australia has the best possible government going forward.”
