‘They just fought religiously’: Firefighters still battling blazes across the state

More than 700 firefighters have spent the night battling dozens of blazes across New South Wales.

A Watch and Act alert remains in place for a blaze threatening a small number of properties southwest of Grafton.

Major fires near Lennox Head and at Salt Ash are back down to Advice level.

On the state’s south coast, Salt Ash local Dennis tells Alan Jones volunteer firefighters have worked incredibly hard over the weekend.

“These people are like going to war.

“They’d come out of the fires and new ones were going in. You could hardly recognise them, they were dirty. All they wanted to have was a shower and a cup of tea.

“They just fought religiously Alan.

“There was 60 trucks in there last night… they just don’t give up.”
