Joe Root and Alastair Cook have frustrated Australia late on Day 2, with the Captain and Vice Captain digging in to put England in a strong position leading into Day 3 at the MCG.

It was England’s best day of Cricket for the entire series taking 7 wickets on day 2 and scoring over 150 runs.

Alastair Cook ended the day 104 not out after taking 11 off the final over off Steve Smith. It was Cook’s most complete innings in this series and will bring him some confidence going forward in the series. Joe Root ended the day 49 not out as England look to edge closer to Australia’s first innings total of 327.

Australia’s two wickets came from Josh Hazelwood and Nathan Lyon before Cook and Root dug their heels in and brought England ever so close to the Australian total.

The Victorian and English supporters have come out in their droves this Test Match with the Day 2 attendance reaching 67,882 meaning over 150,000 people have packed the MCG over the first two days.

Alastair Cook has been given a lifeline on 66 – dropped by Steve Smith at slip off Mitch Marsh. England look in control thanks to Cook who has passed 50 for the first time this series.

TEA at the MCG, England are 1/72 with Alastair Cook showing some of his best form and is on 37 not out. James Vince will remain 17 not out at the final break.

Nathan Lyon with the solitary wicket for Australia, removing Mark Stoneman for 15 off his own bowling.

England ran through the Australian middle order on Day 2, taking 7/83 on Day 2.

Pat Cummins has left the field at the MCG in a distressed state. Apperently the Australian quick is not feeling well due to the heat in Melbourne today.

Australia are all out for 327 after England tore through the home side on the second day at the MCG.

England took 7/83 on Day 2, with Stuart Broad taking 4 wickets, and Jimmy Anderson took 3.

At Lunch on Day 2 at the MCG England have come out on top taking 5 Australian wickets with Stuart Broad the chief destroyer taking the wickets of Shaun Marsh and Jackson Bird.

Earlier, English debutante Tom Curran finally got his first Test Match wicket, taking the big wicket of Steve Smith, getting him to drag the ball onto his own stumps.

Steve Smith has been dismissed early on Day 2 at the MCG, with youngster Tom Curran claiming his first Test wicket after drawing Smith into a drive which the Aussies skipper chopped onto his own stumps.

It was the fourth time Smith has been dismissed in this series and just the first time since 2014 that the Aussie skipper has been sent back to the pavilion at the MCG.

Day 2 is upon us and the Australian side is slowly wrestling back the momentum in the fourth Ashes Test, with Steve Smith picking up where he left off in Perth sitting on 65 not out overnight, whilst Shaun Marsh is 31 not out. Australia ended Day 1 at 3/244 and will look to push on to a huge total today.

David Warner was the player of the day with a blistering hundred, his first of this series, and second Boxing Day Century in his career. He didn’t do it without drama though, dropped on 99 only to be recalled after Debutante Tom Curran had overstepped.

Australia are marginally ahead after Day 1, but England showed plenty of fight throughout the afternoon to get the Aussies on the back foot just after lunch.
