Sydney unprepared for mass blackout event

Article image for Sydney unprepared for mass blackout event

The NSW Chief Scientist has issued a dire message, warning Sydney is completely unprepared for a major blackout incident.

Mary O’Kane has informed the state government illegal human intervention or dramatic weather could plunge the city into darkness for several days, jeopardising our hospital system, fuel and even water supplies.

Ms O’Kane is Chair of the Energy Security Taskforce and spoke with Mark Levy saying mass blackouts are unlikely, but we must prepare now.

“We do have a great emergency system, but we need to get business continuity plans in place for all our public sector agencies.

“Some have very good ones, some need to better ones. The private sector needs to be very engaged.”
