A Syrian national has been arrested in Turkey, suspected of planning an attack on the Gallipoli dawn service.

25-year-old Abdulkerim Hilef was taken into custody in Tekirdağ, a northwest province of Turkey, two hours’ drive from ANZAC Cove.

Police say the suspected Islamic State supporter was planning to attack commemorations at Gallipoli, which are expected to be attended by more than 1,300 Australians.

A Department of Veterans’ Affairs spokesperson has confirmed Australian and New Zealand agencies are liaising with Turkish authorities in relation to the arrest.

The Gallipoli dawn service will go ahead as planned.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has been briefed by Australia’s intelligence agencies.

He’s urging caution, saying they have no conclusive evidence the man was planning an attack on Gallipoli.
