Queensland man who tortured and killed his infant son sentenced

Shane Purssell Akehurst has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the brutal torture and manslaughter of his 21-month-old son.

Corby Mitchell died in March 2015 after his father repeatedly threw him against the wall behind his bed.

Akehurst said he would repeatedly punch his son in the face when he wouldn’t sleep at night.

Corby had 81 injuries to his body when he died, including a severe traumatic brain injury and old rib fractures.

Akehurst pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to a maximum of 12 years and six months behind bars.

With time already served, he will be eligible for parole in March 2025.

Justice Martin Burns took into account the fact Akehurst has a brain tumour and is undergoing chemotherapy.

In reading the sentence, an emotional Ray Hadley was almost left speechless.

“Words fail me,” he says.

“I know people suffering with brain tumours and I have great compassion for them, and my prayers go with them.

“But not for Shane Purssell Akehurst they don’t.”
