Should selective schools accept local students?

Article image for Should selective schools accept local students?

NSW Minister for Education Rob Stokes says specialist schools in New South Wales should be open to local students.

Chris Kenny speaks with education commentator Kevin Donnelly on whether ordinary kids should be accepted into selective schools.

“There are quite a few more selective schools in NSW. 19 are fully selective, but there are 29 that are partially selective where local kids can go.”

Mr Stokes believes in competition in education and says ability and talent should be rewarded.

“I’m all in favour of meritocracy.

“Unfortunately in life, there are winners and losers.

“Normally I support the minister. I think this is just the beginning.”
